Notes on Downloading Data

The data being made available on this website is undergoing continuous revision and update. It is recommended that users refresh their downloads at regular intervals.

Data quality

Please note that with the exception of data for Co. Dublin, the twelve-figure National Grid co-ordinates were derived from geo-referenced OS 6-inch mapping and their accuracy is limited to this scale. Errors may ensue should the user apply the co-ordinates to larger scale maps.

Records that do not refer to 'monuments' are designated 'Redundant record' and are retained in the archive as they may relate to features that were once considered to be monuments but which on investigation proved otherwise. These redundant records may also refer to errors in teh ASI record.

Downloading data sets

There are two methods available for downloading data from the monuments database. There is a download button on the toolbar on the interface viewer that will allow the user to download data for an entire county. Following a query of the database it is possible in certain instances (where the spatial query is less than 100 sq km or where the results returned are less than 2000 records) for the results of that query to be downloaded. The following download formats are available:

  1. Autodesk AutoCAD DWG/DXF
  2. Microstation Design Files (DGN)
  3. ESRI Shapefile
  4. ESRI ArchInfo Export (E00)

The extracted data is placed in a zip file. Further details on how to download are available on the help document accompanying the viewer. Data from the following fields are included in the download: SMR number, townland, class description, National Grid co-ordinates, RMP (True/False field indicating if the record is scheduled for inclusion in the next issue of the statutory Record of Monuments and Places (RMP)).

It should be noted that the exported data requires the user to have a database system to access it. In addition, the map information requires GIS or CAD software to operate and, of course, the necessary expertise in using such systems. If you do not have a RDBMS or a GIS then this data is not accessible to you. Please note that the download facility will not operate for those counties highlighted on the map of Ireland by a pale yellow wash. The data for these counties is currently under correction and being upgraded; these counties will be uploaded to this web server on completion.

Neither the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government nor any third party content provider warrants that any files available for downloading through this service will be free of viruses or similar contamination or destructive features.
